Positive Behaviour Support: getting it right

29 Apr 2026
People & Business Theatre
Specialist Area

Positive Behaviour Support is often spoken about as a clinical intervention, yet its real power lies in how it shapes culture, relationships, and daily practice across a whole service. This masterclass offers a practical framework for implementing PBS in adult social care, moving from organisational values and team structures through person-centred planning, functional behaviour assessment, proactive and reactive strategies, and ongoing monitoring. Drawing on established assessment tools alongside reflective and collaborative practices, the session shows how providers can move beyond managing behaviour towards genuinely improving quality of life.

Learning outcomes

• A practical understanding of how to embed PBS within an organisation's mission, values, and team structures, including the role of a PBS Champion and reflective staff practices.
• Working knowledge of functional behaviour assessment tools such as the Motivation Assessment Scale and ABC charts, and how to develop sound hypotheses about the function of behaviour.
• The ability to design a complete PBS plan, covering proactive strategies, skill-building, and tiered crisis and reactive responses grounded in de-escalation and minimal restriction.
• Insight into how ongoing monitoring, dashboards, and feedback loops can support continuous improvement of person-centred outcomes
