Social Care Institute for Excellence: collaborating and innovating in social care to improve lives

Social Care Institute for Excellence: collaborating and innovating in social care to improve lives

The Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) is an independent social care charity working in partnership to collaborate and innovate to improve people’s lives – with national government, Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), local authorities, people with lived experience, providers, academics, foundations. Working across social care, health and related services such as housing, for adults and children, we contribute to the development and implementation of better care, support and safeguarding.

Our Head of Safeguarding, Vijay Patel, will be at the Care Show on our Exhibition Stand, C73, throughout the conference to share practical examples of SCIE’s impact and outline how we can work with care providers to anticipate and manage safeguarding risks through tailored, co-produced solutions, as well as our wider work.

We deliver four main offers, across all of which we support the DHSC annually: consultancy, expert training, evidence-based research and policy insights, and resources including guidance and toolkits.

Care providers are navigating a complex and changing social care landscape that is forcing them to think differently about safeguarding. We can support them through this to build confident, resilient safeguarding cultures. Our safeguarding team brings a rich breadth and depth of experience, drawing on a combined 150 years of experience supporting organisations from across every sector and every area of the UK. As we are not-for-profit, our safeguarding consultancy and training services offer exceptional value for money, and our income goes towards improving social care.

Our consultancy work includes local improvement and helping organisations that are operating in difficult circumstances. This involves working with teams across local government, care, health and housing, to identify and embed new ways of working.

In safeguarding, we partner with organisations to anticipate and manage safeguarding risks, with expert-led insights, tailored training and co-produced solutions built around people and pressures. We have successfully delivered several hundred projects over the last three years supporting organisations from Government departments and councils to health, care and support providers.

We offer analysis and improvement work to support organisations and partnerships to gain an independent view of their safeguarding systems and processes, covering audits, service and case reviews. We also help you learn from safeguarding incidents and assess current practice across both children and adults’ safeguarding.

With major programmes of social care, NHS and housing reform unfolding, our focus is to support this change and secure a more effective, efficient and safe future for social care. Alongside our focus on safeguarding, we will also be providing trusted expertise on wider social care issues in panel events.

Our Interim Chief Executive, Gerard Crofton-Martin, will take part in a discussion with The Outstanding Society on regulation, quality and compliance, and we will also be taking part in a Keynote Theatre session titled ‘Towards a National Care Service: exploring how we raise standards of care’. Our Head of External Affairs, George Appleton, will be joined by SCIE’s Trustee Isaac Samuels OBE, Co-Chair of the National Co-Production Advisory Group and Think Local Act Personal, to discuss SCIE’s sector-led vision for national standards that truly work—raising quality, improving fairness, and bringing real consistency across the country.

“As genuine experts in social care, SCIE bring strategic expertise & knowledge to help with the challenges organisations are facing ... Their breadth of customers and convening power enable them to support in a wide range of ways. They understand the business, tailor their offering and have the ability to engage with all the issues, while focusing on the end-user at all times.” Director of Adult Social Services
