Jenny's Diary - Supporting conversations about dementia
Talking about dementia is never easy. UK dementia strategies
agree that everyone has the right to know their diagnosis – not just as a human
right, but to ensure the right support is in place. Yet, there’s still little
guidance on how to have these conversations with someone who has a learning
disability. People often worry about what will be understood, what words to
use, and how to handle the reaction.
Jenny’s Diary helps by offering a simple three-step
approach:
Part 1 opens up conversations about why Jenny’s behaviour
may be changing and how best to support her to live well with dementia.
Part 2 offers guidance on how to talk with Jenny about her
dementia diagnosis in a clear and supportive way.
Part 3 includes advice on how to talk to George, Jenny’s
partner, recognising the important role friends and partners play in offering
support.
